Nigeria power forward, Amy Okonkwo, was declared most valuable player (MVP), yesterday, as D’Tigress beat Senegal to retain the FIBA Women Afrobasket Championship in Kigali, Rwanda.
Okonkwo, who also won the Best Power Forward Award, was instrumental as Nigeria defeated the Senegalese by 84 to 74 points.
Under a new coach, Rena Wakama, who assumed duty barely one month to the competition, D’Tigress went through an unbeaten run in the competition that included victories over hosts Rwanda, Egypt and Cote d’Ivoire.
Over 7, 000 fans were at the arena to watch the D’Tigress lead in all four quarters to defend their title.
The first quarter ended 19 to 10 points in Nigeria’s advantage. The D’Tigress won the second quarter by 43-31, took the third by 62 to 55 before wrapping the game in the fourth quarter by 84 to 74 points.
