Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, the deputy president of the Nigerian Senate and the All Progressives Congress’ candidate for governor of Delta State, on Saturday asserted that Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, the PDP’s vice presidential nominee, and Sheriff Oborevwori, the party’s candidate for governor of Delta State, are only running for office to avoid prosecution for what he called the mismanagement of public funds accruing to the oil-rich state.

Omo-Agege, according to multiple reports, stated that if Okowa and Oborevwori, the current speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, are elected as vice president and governor, respectively, they will receive immunity to avoid prosecution. Omo-Agege was speaking during a Townhall meeting with the TEKAN/ECWA bloc of the Christian Association of Nigeria on Saturday in Warri.

He argued that by electing both men to such positions, they would be able to avoid prosecution for further indebting the state.

While he doesn’t have anything against them personally, Omo-Agege claimed that Okowa’s priorities as governor are petty and pointless, his thinking is flawed, and his choice of Oborevwori is a no-brainer.

He insisted while there are constitutional institutions that address public corruption, “the most urgent task when you believe that your political leaders are corrupt is to vote them out”.

“When I say Okowa and Sheriff are corrupt, I say so because there is nothing to show for the over N3.5 trillion naira they have received in the past seven and half years,” said Omo-Agege. “And if the people of Delta State agree with me, they should make sure Okowa does not become vice president and Sheriff, governor of Delta State.”

When elected governor, Omo-Agege pledged not to engage in a witch hunt, claiming that the state has more than enough wealth to manage its affairs and to strengthen its economic base.

“I am a public servant, I want to render service to my people by becoming governor and you will not regret making me your governor. When you chest out for me and I emerge governor, you will not regret it,” he said.

Rev. Samson Ichi, the leader of the CAN bloc, assured Omo-Agege of the prayers of the TEKAN/ECWA leaders in Delta State.

“We are not partisan, our role is to pray for you, any time you need us, call upon us and we will pray for you,” he said.

Omo-Agege clarified during a discussion on the Amukpe/Uromi Road award that, thanks to his efforts, President Muhammadu Buhari just approved the road’s re-construction and the contractor will soon return to the site.

He referred to Warri as the pitiful swamp city of Nigeria and pledged to make significant investments in urban restoration when elected governor. In addition, in order to give young people in the state job possibilities, Omo-Agege promised to hire Julius Berger to handle the construction of the Ughelli/Asaba and the Warri/Agbor highways when he becomes governor.

The Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria of Agbarho and Oghara, as well as the Delta state branch of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), were also engaged by Omo-Agege over the weekend.

He urged PFN to encourage their members to vote for all APC candidates, including its presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu and himself.

He noted that the Church can only benefit with Tinubu as president, because “his wife, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, is a pastor with the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) and five of their children are Christians.”

He added that Tinubu’s wife is also a proud daughter of Delta state who deserves Deltans’ support in the contest to elect her husband president in 2023.
