Ondo 2020: Olanusi dissolves Unity Forum, supports Akeredolu’s re-election
Major opposition within ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State against the second term of Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, Unity Forum, has been dissolved, seeking the unity of the party.
The leader of the group and former deputy governor, Alhaji Ali Olanusi, had resolved all grievances with the governor and chose to work for his reelection in the forthcoming October 10, 2020 election.
For the record, this is the first time the former deputy governor will appear in solidarity with Akeredolu in the last three years.
The Olanusi-led Unity Forum had paraded an array of aspirants against the governor’s second term by mobilizing strongly for his suspension and adoption of direct primary option for the July 20 governorship primary.
Meanwhile, the Unity Forum’s consensus candidate and Second Runner-up in the APC Primary, Chief Olusola Oke, had since joined Akeredolu and was appointed among the 104 members of APC National Campaign Council for Ondo State election.
But at an enlarged stakeholders meeting held in Akure at the weekend, leaders of the APC, especially governorship aspirants resolved to work for the victory of the party’s candidate and state governor, Akeredolu.
The Guardian learnt that the thrust of the meeting was to approve wholly the reconciliation efforts embarked upon by leaders of the party shortly after the governorship primary election which produced Akeredolu as APC candidate.
Others dignitaries at the meeting included: the governor’s running mate, Lucky Ayedatiwa; the immediate past Deputy governor, Alhaji Lasisi Oluboyo; former National Vice Chairman of APC in South-West, Chief Pius Akinyelure.
The governorship aspirants in the just concluded APC primary in the state; present and past legislators at all levels; federal, state and local governments appointees with party officials at the state, local governments, wards and units levels were also present.
All the governorship aspirants at the meeting took turn to pledge their loyalty to the party and announced the collapse of their structures, offices, men and resources to the successful prosecution of the Akeredolu-Ayedatiwa ticket.
Governor Akeredolu paid glowing tributes to the altruism of the aspirants, urging all leaders and members of the APC in the state to work for the success of party in the forthcoming governorship election.
He specifically lauded his co-contestants for positively yielding to the reconciliation moves he embarked upon, saying they had displayed exemplary leadership.
While nothing with satisfaction the resolve of all leaders to work assiduously as one indivisible party with one united purpose and sole mission of winning elections to remain in government, Governor Akeredolu said the new spirit within the party must not for any reason dwindle but continue to soar high.
The APC candidate urged all the party faithfuls to work hard to ensure victory for all APC candidates in the forthcoming local government election in the state, which holds on Saturday, August 22, 2020.
According to him, the election across the 18 council areas and 203 wards would be used to justify the popularity, acceptability and strength of the party.
He also used the occasion to appreciate the Speaker and members of the House of Assembly for standing by the party when some of their colleagues opted for anti-party activities.
Akeredolu reeled out the scorecard of his administration across infrastructural development, the industrial revolution, reconstruction and remodelling of schools; alongside reawakening of abandoned projects by the immediate past administration.
According to him, his administration gives premium to healthcare delivery, employment of citizens and priority to welfare of workers and pensioners in the state.
While the state Chairman of the party, Engr Ade Adetimehin, said the highpoint of the reconciliation was that APC under his leadership would henceforth be one party.
He added that there would be one structure and common purpose for all the party members, without the existence of any form of groupings.
Adetimehin lauded the healthy relationship between government and the party leadership, revealing that the former is committed to personally financing a befitting party secretariat in the state.
