Ondo: Drama as suspect flees courtroom

A mild drama ensued, yesterday, at an Odigbo Magistrate’s Court in Ondo State, when a 21-year-old apprentice, Segun Akala, remanded in custody tried to escape from the courtroom.

A mild drama ensued, yesterday, at an Odigbo Magistrate’s Court in Ondo State, when a 21-year-old apprentice, Segun Akala, remanded in custody tried to escape from the courtroom.
  
Akala, who was arraigned before the court for theft, took to his heels in handcuffs after Magistrate D. O. Ogunfuyi ordered that he be remanded in Okitipupa Correctional Centre.
 
It took efforts of police operatives within the court premises to apprehend the defendant after he jumped through the court’s window and fled to a nearby bush.
  


Earlier, the police prosecutor, Usifo James had informed the court that the accused committed the offence on May 27, 2023, at Aipon Road, Odigbo Local Council Area of Ondo State.
   
The defendant was accused of stealing a motor saw, chain and pull over cloth valued at N300,000,  belonging to one Akintan Akintade.
 
The defendant pleaded not guilty of the offence levelled against him.
 
According to the prosecutor, the offence is contrary to Section 390 (9), of the Criminal Code, Cap. 37 Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006.
   
The prosecutor sought for an adjournment to enable him study the case file and prepare his witnesses for trial, while the defendant’s counsel,  Rufus Omotayo, prayed the court to grant the defendant bail in most liberal term
 
Magistrate Ogunfuyi in his ruling, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N100,000 naira with two sureties in like sum.

He ordered the defendant to be remanded in Okitipupa Correctional Centre pending the perfection of his bail and adjourned the case to June 23, 2023.
