A group under the aegis of the Akure Youths Coalition has expressed concern over the spate of insecurity in the state, particularly within the Akure axis, warning that the incidents are not isolated cases as earlier claimed but rather evidence of a dangerous pattern of insecurity that continues to spread in the state.

According to the youth, the attacks which have been occurring unchecked in the past few months have left families devastated and communities living in fear that were once considered secure.

Communities such as Ilu-Abo, Eleyowo, Imafon, Igushin, Ilado and others neighbouring them have been faced with killings and abductions by gunmen.

A few days ago, gunmen suspected to be kidnappers struck the Igushin community in the latest assault, attacking a poultry farm where they killed a mother and her daughter and also killed a youth in Ilado a few hours later.

According to the coalition in a statement signed by its leaders, Comrade Ogundipe O’Seyi and Comrade Adekanbi Oluwatuyi, residents of the affected communities are now abandoning their homes over the situation.

While acknowledging the state government’s proactive efforts, the coalition stated that the incessant killings have overshadowed most of the government’s achievements.

The coalition demanded the revocation of lands allocated to suspected criminal elements while also calling on traditional rulers to urgently review and, where necessary, revoke land allocations granted to herdsmen in the overriding interest of public safety.

The statement read in parts, “We urge the Ondo State Government, all the political office holders, traditional leaders, corporate organisations, opinion leaders and other well-meaning concerned individuals to collaborate, as human ingenuity can be contrived to continue engaging this crisis with the seriousness it deserves.

“We also call on traditional rulers, religious leaders, community associations, and civil society groups to promote unity, vigilance, and responsible information-sharing in support of security efforts.

“To the people and youths of Akure, we urge calm, resilience, and heightened vigilance. While we mourn with the families of victims and stand in solidarity with affected communities, we must not allow fear to divide us or weaken our collective resolve. Àkúré remains our home, and together we must defend its peace, dignity, and future.

“We demand justice for the victims. We demand security for our people. We demand an immediate end to these senseless killings. Enough is enough.”
