Bauchi State Police Command, yesterday, confirmed the death of one person and the burning of 65 houses following the coronation of hamlet head of Sang in Bogoro Local Council of the state.

The Command’s spokesperson, Ahmed Wakil, who confirmed the development, said irate youth engaged in skirmishes when the hamlet head was crowned.

Wakil said: “On April 15, at about 7:00p.m., the Command received a distress call over skirmishes in the Bogoro area of the state. Preliminary investigation revealed that the communal clash in Sang village emanated from the coronation of the hamlet head of Sang.

“Some irate youth protested against the coronation. Consequently, it resulted in an attack on innocent citizens, as the irate youth set 64 houses, three motorcycles and property worth millions of naira ablaze.”

According to him, one Apollos Danlami, 70, was killed in the incident, while one Naemiya Bature, 65, and other people were injured in the fracas.

Wakil said that the Command deployed police operatives, comprising the tactical team of Rapid Response Squad (RRS) and Operation Restore Peace, which swiftly responded to the distress call and their efforts brought the situation under control.

“The area is relatively peaceful for now, and security measures have been reinforced in and around Bogoro council,  as the safety of the citizens remains the highest priority of the Command,  with a work round-the-clock to keep harm at bay.

“Also, patrol is ongoing to maintain public peace and order. The CP has directed the Divisional  Police Officer (DPO) Bogoro to commence a discrete investigation to unravel the circumstances that led to the turmoil.

“Furthermore, concerted efforts have been intensified to arrest the perpetrators of this dastardly act and bring them to book,” he added.
