One dies, seven rescued in Ondo building collapse
A grandmother, identified as Grace Olom, has died in a building collapse that occurred in Akure, the capital city of Ondo State.
The deceased was unlucky, but her son, Mr. Benson Olom, daughter-in-law and five grandchildren, who were trapped in the debris were rescued by sympathisers.
The tragic incident happened around 3:00a.m. yesterday, along Fanibi Junction in Akure, when the storey building caved in while the occupants were sleeping.
Reliable sources in the environment attributed the collapse to the partitioning and unprofessional restructuring effected on the building by the landlord, whose name was not known at press time.
Recounting his experience, one of the survivors, Olom, who lost his mother and pleaded for support from government and philanthropists, said: “The building collapsed and my mother died instantly, and her remains had been taken out.
“One of my children, who sustained a head injury, has been taken to the hospital and I was told she’s going to undergo a surgery. I want the state government and well meaning Nigerians to come to my rescue.”
He blamed the landlord for the collapse, saying: “The landlord recently came and tampered with the beam of the building, he said he wants to turn the downstairs to flat without making proper provision to sustain the building.”
Meanwhile, Ondo State government, through the Ministry of Environment, had sealed off the building till further notice.
