•Laments stalemate on rescue after payment of ransom

One year after the provost of College of Medicine, Gregory University Ututu,  Abia State, Prof. Uwadinachi Iweha, was abducted, his family members are in disarray that not much has been heard of him despite the payment of ransom demanded by his abductors.

Iweha, a professor of surgery, was abducted on June 5, 2022, by unknown persons in front of his country home at Umuajameze Umuopara in Umuahia South Local Council of Abia State, and had since not communicated with his family members or released by his abductors, who reportedly demanded ransom and were paid same.

His son, Chukwudi Iweha, an engineer, told newsmen, yesterday, at the family home, that they still pray for his safe return. He lamented that efforts to rescue him have seemingly been stalemated, even  as his telephone was recovered by the police.

He said: “Security forces have been working with us with some results, but 52 weeks have passed and they have not been able to produce the real culprits behind this devilish action or return our father.”

Chukwudi, who  debunked rumours of his father’s return, said: “We cannot discern this motive behind this evil act or even point accusing fingers at anybody, but have trust in God that he will return and be reunited with us in good health.”

Explaining further, he said two of the five arrested suspects were arraigned before a Magistrate’s Court, but the case was transferred to the High Court.

On how his father  was abducted, Chukwudi said: “ On that fateful day, my father returned early from church service  at about 11.45 am to change his clothes and proceed as directed,  to represent the  University Chancellor, Prof. Gregory Ibe, at a function at Anglican Church, Old Umuahia in the same Umuahia South Council.

“He was accosted by the assailants in front of his house and taken away with the University’s official car. We have not had any contact with him since then.”
