Communities in Ede South Council of Osun State have resolved to end Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in their communities because of the dangers it poses to girls.
The communities, namely Ogo Oluwa, Ifelodun, Oluyemi, Ifelagba and Temitope, took the decision at a forum, which was organised by a non-governmental organisation, Action Health Incorporated (AHI), with the support of United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and in collaboration with Osun State Ministry of Women Affairs.
The state Gender Focal Person at the ministry, Ms Lola Adewale, took time off to explain the consequences of FGM practice to the participants and charged them to join the campaign against female circumcision.
The participants promised to spread the message of eradication of FGM in their various communities as they pledged to shun the practice. The Programme Officer of Action Health Incorporated, a non-governmental organisation championing the advocacy to end FGM, Fatimah Idris, said the resolution of the communities to end FGM is commendable and charged other towns and communities in Osun State to emulate them.
