The Zacchaeus Onumba Dibiaezue Memorial Libraries (ZODML) has revealed that 10 finalists from the over 700 entries received for this year’s poetry challenge would be unveiled tomorrow.

The ZODML instituted the poetry challenge for students in the nation’s public tertiary institutions.

The competition, themed ‘Motherhood’ aimed at inculcating a competitive spirit among students, as well as challenges them to think intellectually.

Speaking on the poetry challenge, spokesperson for ZODML, Ifeoma Esiri, said that the competition has the tendency to awaken the creative process in the students.

According to her, in composing a poem for the competition, students would develop skills of creative self-expression and experimentation with language. She said that the challenge would set them to think, then prepare and formulate their thoughts.

Esiri stated that the organisers received 791 submissions of which 232 were rejected for various reasons. She said that the figure would further be narrowed down to 10 finalists who will be announced on May 14, Mother’s Day, in line with the challenge’s theme of Motherhood.

According to her, at the grand finale, the overall winner will receive N100, 000 cash prize, while four runners-up will get N10, 000 each.

Esiri said a panel of three judges, consisting of notable poets and authors, lead by multiple award-winning author in prose and poetry, Mr. Tade Ipadeola, would oversee the judging process.  Others include Ms. Aduke Gomez (a poet and author of children’s stories), and Ms. Achalugo Chioma Ilozumba, an award-winning playwright.

ZODML is a non-profit organisation based in Lagos, working in the education sector. Since its inception in 2000, it has established 54 libraries, 34 in local council primary schools in Lagos and Anambra states, and 19 in custodial centres across the country and one community library.
