
The Oyo/Osun Command of the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) has appealed for closer ties with traditional institutions and other stakeholders to achieve common goals and end smuggling in the country.
Controller of the Oyo/Osun Area Command, Dr. Ben Oramalugo, made this call during a visit to the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Owolabi Olakuleyin, at the Olubadan’s Palace, Oke-Aremo, Ibadan, Oyo State.
Dr. Oramalugo said that one of the aims of the visit was to show respect and recognize the crucial role of the traditional institution in fostering peace and security in the region.
The visit, which took place on Thursday, September 5, 2024, aimed to strengthen the existing relationship between the Command and the traditional leadership, as both entities work together to promote economic growth, secure borders, and enhance community engagement.
In his address, Dr. Oramalugo stated that the Olubadan’s leadership and wisdom have greatly contributed to the peace and development of the ancient city and that the Nigerian Customs Service values the support and cooperation of traditional rulers to ensure that smuggling activities are curbed and legitimate trade is promoted in Oyo and Osun States.
Dr. Oramalugo also briefed the Olubadan on the activities of the Area Command, highlighting the Command’s achievements in revenue generation, suppression of smuggling, and trade facilitation.
He expressed appreciation for the peaceful environment that Ibadan provides, which allows the Customs Service to effectively discharge its duties.
Dr. Oramalugo stated that the courtesy visit marks a significant step in fostering a closer working relationship between the Nigerian Customs Service and the traditional institution of Ibadan, as both entities pledged to continue working together to enhance the well-being of the people and promote the economic growth of the region.
In his response, Oba Owolabi Olakuleyin, who was represented by Oba Hamidu Salaudeen (Ekerin Olubadan of Ibadan Land), applauded the initiative by the Area Controller. He also lauded the efforts of the NCS in safeguarding the economic interests of the nation and protecting local industries from the adverse effects of smuggling.
He assured Dr. Oramalugo and his team of the traditional institution’s continued support in combating illegal trade and ensuring the security of the region.
The Aremo Kabiyesi, Prince Olasumbo Olukuleyin, while giving the vote of thanks, stated that the traditional institution is proud of the great work the Customs Service is doing to protect the borders and boost the economy.
He also assured the Area Controller that the institution will always be open to collaboration with the Command to ensure peace, security, and prosperity in the state.
