Panic as suspected cultists kill rival in Osun, one injured in Enugu
Residents of Oke-Ijetu community in Osogbo, Osun State, were yesterday thrown into panic when some suspected cultists killed a rival gang member, simply identified as Shogo.
Eyewitnesses alleged that Shogo was attacked with a machete, but could not be cut and his head was smashed with stone by the suspected cultists.
The victim, a resident of Surulere Street, Oke-Ijetu area, was allegedly pursued from a barbing salon shop owned by his friend before he was killed.
One of the residents said the “man (Shogo) was pursued from a barbing salon. He was macheted and they later smashed his head with a stone when the machete could not penetrate his body.”
Another eyewitness, identified as Waliu, said Shogo and the owner of the shop were running the salon together.
Residents of the area hurriedly shut their doors when the cultists, numbering five, stormed their neighbourhood with machetes and other dangerous weapons.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, Yemisi Opalola, said the police had started investigating the killing and promised that the culprits would be apprehended.
Meanwhile, one person was reportedly injured as suspected cultists clashed on the Agbani Road, close to Garriki Market in Enugu South Local Government Area of Enugu State.
The clash, a witness told The Guardian, happened in the afternoon and led to a shooting which made people to scamper for safety.
“There was shooting along this Agbani Road and all of us inside the market started running, thinking that the dreaded unknown gunmen had invaded the market,” the witness said.
The witness added: “Some people said their items were stolen by the people. We later discovered they were cultists and one person was shot but the police arrived at the scene and rushed him to the hospital. I don’t think he is dead as he was still breathing when he was taken to the hospital.”
Another witness said it was purely a cult activity and the people that shot the man trailed him to this area and shot him.
But Enugu State Police Command spokesperson, Daniel Ndukwe, said that contrary to the report in some online news platforms, there was no gunshot in any market in Enugu.
He also confirmed that one person was shot, but said the personnel of the command from Awkunanaw Division arrived at the scene early and rushed him to the hospital, stressing that he was responding to treatment.
“Following a distress call received at Awkunanaw Police Division, alleging that a young man was shot by suspected cultists, along Agbani Road, close to Garriki Market, Awkunanaw Enugu, police operatives swiftly moved to the scene, secured and rushed the victim to a nearby hospital, where he is responding to treatment.
Also, the Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Ndatsu Aliyu, has ordered the Anti-Cultism Unit of the command to conduct discreet investigation to fish out and bring the assailants to book.
