PDP, Edo govt flay assault on members
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State yesterday condemned the content of a viral video, where youths were seen assaulting and violently debasing some party members.
It was gathered that the attack on members, including an elderly man in Akoko-Edo Council, is not unconnected with issues of divided loyalty by some PDP members in Edo State.
A statement made available to newsmen in Benin City by Dr. Tony Aziegbemi, Chairman, PDP Edo State, described the act as unacceptable and unwarranted.
Aziegbemi said the attack was particularly more painful to watch as the Vice Chairman of Ward 8, Akoko-Edo Council, Pa Samuel Dania, was attacked.
The statement reads in part: “The assault was unwarranted, unacceptable, condemnable and the party calls on security agencies to investigate the matter and ensure the arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators of this senseless crime.”
Meanwhile, Edo State Government has vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice. Reacting to the incident, Chief of Staff to the Edo State governor, Osaigbovo Iyoha, in a statement yesterday, said preliminary investigations revealed that the incident appeared to have occurred in Edo State, as the persons in the video spoke in a language indigenous to the state.
He said the state government with its uncompromising commitment to maintaining law and order frowns on all forms of violence and is particularly appalled by the content of the video.
According to him, government has ordered security agencies to investigate the incident to ensure that anyone found culpable is made to face the full weight of extant laws in the state, particularly the Violence Against Persons (VAP) Law.
