PENGASSAN cautions against oil sector restructuring
Senior oil workers have cautioned the Federal Government against restructuring the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and other regulatory agencies.
The national public relations officer of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), Emmanuel Ojugbana, who gave the warning yesterday, explained that while executing a wholesome reform in the oil and gas industry appears desirable and proper, it was equally unadvisable to contemplate any sort of restructuring without the contributions of those the action would directly or indirectly affect
He wondered why a critical aspect of the reforms like the workforce was being overlooked in the current calculation.
“PENGASSAN wishes to state unequivocally, that it is not aware of any known channel other than the National Assembly with powers to either repeal or enact laws on existing corporations and agencies duly set up by law,” he said.
Ojugbana, while stating that the union has been pushing for the passage of the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB), however, regretted that the advocacy yet remains unattended to 18 months after the coming of the current administration.
He added that PENGASSAN had severally made its input known, including job creation and security, fiscal responsibility, infrastructural development, promotion of local content, local refining capacity, community development and wealth creation for Nigerians.
