The Kano State Police Command has arrested a content creator who allegedly threatened to mobilise youths to unleash violence on residents of the Sabon Gari community in the state.
The arrest followed the circulation of a video clip on social media in which the suspect allegedly incited public disorder with inflammatory remarks against non-indigenous residents, thereby raising tension in the state.
Briefing journalists at the command’s headquarters on Thursday evening, the Commissioner of Police in Kano, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, confirmed the arrest and vowed that the suspect would be prosecuted after a thorough investigation.
Bakori, who did not disclose the suspect’s identity, insisted that the command would not condone any act capable of threatening the prevailing peace in Kano and urged residents to remain calm.
Speaking at a joint press conference with the Commissioner for Information and Home Affairs, Abdullahi Ibrahim Waiya, the police commissioner strongly condemned the creation and dissemination of such inflammatory content and warned individuals involved in similar acts to desist or face the full weight of the law.
According to Bakori, “We wish to state that the command views the inflammatory statement seriously and the suspect will face the full weight of the law at the end of the investigation.
“Any person found spreading false information will be arrested, investigated and prosecuted accordingly. The command will not tolerate any form of hate speech, incitement or violence. Adequate security measures have also been put in place to prevent any breach of peace and ensure the safety of all residents.”
The commissioner added that the command is working closely with other security agencies to monitor the situation and respond promptly to any incident, assuring the public that there is no cause for alarm.
On his part, the Commissioner for Information, Waiya, said the state government remains committed to ensuring the safety and protection of all residents, regardless of ethnicity or religious affiliation.
He noted that as a cosmopolitan city, Kano remains a melting pot of people from diverse backgrounds who contribute to the social and economic development of the state.
Waiya further assured that the government would continue to support security agencies to strengthen their capacity to protect lives and property, stressing that authorities would not allow any act capable of undermining peace or disrupting economic development in the state.
