Police arraign seven suspects for attacking Oyetola’s wife, aides
Osun State Police Command, yesterday, arraigned seven suspects before an Osogbo Magistrate’s Court for allegedly attacking wife of the state governor, Mrs. Kafayat Oyetola.
The defendants: Omolola Paul, 40, Rasaki Hammed, 19, Soliu Waheed, 21, Tiamiyu Basiru, 30, Olayiwola John, 26, Owoade Mutiu, 28, and Ibrahim Tunde, 20, were arraigned on four-count charge bordering on conspiracy to commit felony, serious assault and malicious damage.
The police prosecutor, Inspector Asanbe Kayode, alleged that the defendants with others at large, caused breach of peace, by attacking the ‘first lady’ and inflicting injuries on her aides, Mr. Benson Oyebode and Mr. Femi Alabi, an operative of the Department of State Security (DSS) by throwing stones at them.
He added that the defendants unlawfully damaged the glasses of three vehicles in Mrs. Oyetola’s convoy, adding that the value of the damaged vehicles were yet to be known and that they are properties of Osun State Government, attached to the first lady.
Addressing the court, the prosecutor alleged that the accused persons committed the offence on August 19, 2022 at about 8:00p.m. at Owode-Ede market in Ede.
Asanbe said the offences contravened sections 516, 249, 451(b), 356(2) of the Criminal Code Cap 34 Vol. II, Laws of Osun State of Nigeria, 2002.
However, the defendants pleaded not guilty to the allegations.
Their counsel, S.A Gbenle, prayed the court to admit them to bail, noting that they would provide reliable sureties to stand their trial.
The Magistrate, I.R. Salami, consequently granted them bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in the like sum and adjourned to September 26 for hearing.
