The Lagos State Police Command has arrested one Biola Idris for physically assaulting his wife and inflicting grievous bodily injuries on her.

The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Response team, in a statement, said it received a distress call from the survivor, who called to report that her husband of 17 years locked her up in the factory they jointly own, pounced on her and beat her up.

Head of the DSVRT, Titilola Adeniyi, in the statement, said the woman sustained life-threatening injuries in the process and was fearful that if she didn’t escape, she would have lost her life.

“She was immediately rushed to the hospital and the DSVRT assisted her in preserving evidence of the assault. Upon questioning the reason her husband of almost two decades would assault her so badly, she disclosed that this was not the first time her husband would physically, emotionally, verbally and economically abuse her and had sadly become a regular occurrence.

“The Lagos State DSVRT referred the case to Owutu Police Station, Ikorodu, for investigation and the case was subsequently charged to Ita-Elewa Magistrates’ Court, Ikorodu.

“The survivor was also referred to receive psycho-social support to assist her on her road to healing,” she added.

Adeniyi said Idris’ action contravenes the Protection Against Domestic Violence Law as well as the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 and the team would ensure that justice is served and the perpetrator is punished.

She reiterated the state’s zero-tolerance to all forms of domestic and sexual violence.
