Taraba State Police Command has arrested a trigger-happy inspector for allegedly killing an innocent citizen.

Also arrested were his colleagues, who were at the scene of the alleged incident.

Confirming the arrest and detention of the officers, the Command’s spokesperson, Abdullahi Usman, said the state’s Commissioner of Police, Yusuf Suleiman, called for the arrest of the inspector, adding that investigation is ongoing.

The Guardian learnt that the incident occurred on Monday in Sibre village of Ardo-Kola Local Council of the state.

Usman said: “The Command received information that a police inspector who was on routine duty, at a checkpoint in Sibre village, outskirts of Jalingo, used his rifle and shot down a gentleman who was passing by the checkpoint.

“ The officer and his colleagues, posted to the checkpoint, have been arrested and handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for further investigation.”

The Commissioner has directed the department to unravel why the inspector used an arm on an innocent soul.

The action was in line with the directive of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Akali Usman, that policemen who indulged in wrongful use of arms should not be spared.”

On recent attacks in Ussa and Ardo-Kola Local Councils, where several persons were reportedly killed, the police spokesperson said normalcy has been restored in the areas.
