The Rivers State Police Command has said that it is investigating a TikTok video alleging that its officers abducted and held a man for ransom.

In the video titled “How I was abducted by the Nigerian Police”, the Tiktoker, who named @thekaypersona said that he was picked up by police officers while on a boat trip.

The Tiktoker said the police officers did not tell him why he was being arrested or where he was being taken. They simply told him to get into their vehicle and follow them to the police station.

The Tiktoker claimed he was taken to a cell and held for several hours. He was not processed or charged with any crime.

He said the police officers eventually told him that he would have to pay them ₦150,000 to be released. The Tiktoker negotiated the ransom down to ₦50,000, which he withdrew from an ATM and paid to the police officers in cash.

“The Nigerian police are on a rampage and you don’t have to do anything illegal to be picked up by them. They will kidnap you, take you to their station, and lock you inside the cell. This is exactly what happened to me. And I’m coming here to tell you guys so that everybody that is out there will be sensitised,” the TikToker said.

Reacting to this allegation, the Rivers State Police in a statement said the TikToker has come forward to officially register his grievances about how he was abducted and held for ransom by its officers.

The Command commended the man for his willingness to engage with the police and his assistance in ensuring transparency and accountability.

It also noted that the officers involved in this abduction allegation have been identified and that a thorough investigation into the allegations is currently underway.
