The Enugu State Command of the Nigeria Police has begun investigations into the mysterious death of a groom and six other persons after a traditional marriage ceremony in Adani community in Uzo-uwani council of the state

Enugu State commissioner of police, Ahmed Ammani, said a thorough investigation would unravel the cause of the incident that has also left eight persons hospitalized in the area.

A statement by the command’s spokesman, Daniel Ndukwe said that the eight persons were hospitalized after they were found unconscious after the ceremony.

“Following the receipt of a report alleging the Sudden and Unnatural Death (SUD) of six (6) persons and the hospitalization of eight (8) others, at Akutara Village in Adani Community of Uzo-Uwani LGA, on 27/8/22, the Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, CP Ahmed Ammani, has ordered the State CID Enugu to launch a full-scale investigation to unravel the circumstances surrounding the death and hospitalization of the victims”, Ndukwe said

He added that the commissioner commiserates with the families and friends of the deceased while calling on residents of the community to maintain peace and support the police with necessary information in the investigation.

The victims died after returning from a wedding ceremony at Obollo-Afor in Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State.

A source in the Adani community, who pleaded for anonymity, said that they were suspecting food poisoning.

Another source said they suspect that the victims died of carbon dioxide inhaled from a power generator, which was brought onto the veranda of a house where they stayed while it was raining when they returned from the wedding ceremony.

There is also a suspicion that the guests died of the effect of an insecticide, which was sprayed to rid the room of mosquitoes.

It was gathered that a neighbour who had gone to welcome the new bride had noticed how the victims were lying helplessly on the floor and alerted others who joined him to take them to hospitals.
