The Kwara State Police Command has announced plans to prosecute three former police officers dismissed in connection with the alleged killing of Qoyum Abdulyekeen Ishola, a student from Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin.

In a statement issued on Monday night, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Ejire-Adeyemi Toun, acting on behalf of Commissioner of Police (CP), Victor Olaiya, confirmed that the officers would face charges in a competent court.

The officers—Inspector Abiodun Kayode, Inspector James Emmanuel, and Sergeant Oni Philip—were found guilty of several offenses, including leaving their assigned post, corrupt practices, and the unlawful exercise of authority, following an internal investigation and disciplinary trial. Their dismissal from the Nigeria Police Force is effective as of October 4, 2024.

“This decisive action highlights the unwavering commitment of the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, NPM, PhD, to upholding justice, professionalism, and accountability across the Nigeria Police Force. Under his leadership, we are resolute in ensuring that officers conduct themselves with integrity, and any breach of ethical standards, particularly in cases leading to loss of life, will be met with a stiff response,” the statement read.

“The Kwara State Police Command, led by Commissioner of Police CP Victor Olaiya, psc(+), extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Qoyum Abdulyekeen Ishola. We share in their grief and remain committed to providing them with support during this difficult period.”

It stressed the intention to hold officers accountable for any breaches of ethical standards, particularly in incidents that result in loss of life.

The police also extended their condolences to Ishola’s family, friends, and colleagues, expressing their commitment to support them during this difficult time.

Ishola, a 21-year-old student in the Electrical Electronics Engineering department, was allegedly killed during a stop-and-search operation in the Fate area of Ilorin on September 4, 2024. His death sparked protests from students at Kwara State Polytechnic, who demanded justice.

The Student Union Government has called for a comprehensive investigation by the Nigeria Police Force to bring those responsible to justice. The police urged the public to remain patient and trust the legal process, assuring them of their dedication to maintaining law and order in Kwara State.
