Ahead of the 2026 Anambra State governorship election, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has revealed plans by criminal elements to infiltrate the state and disrupt the electoral process.
Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, Ikioye Orutugu, disclosed this on Tuesday in Abuja during a dialogue session with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) under the Situation Room platform and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Represented by ACP Ekuri Remi Gius, Orutugu said the police had identified several flashpoints in the state and would intensify raids and surveillance to maintain peace before and during the polls.
He stated, “Election comes with its own advantages and disadvantages. Because Anambra is having an off-cycle election, those with negative intentions may attempt to infiltrate the state as machineries. People will pay them to come and cause problems.
“However, since other states won’t be voting, the entire state will be secured with police and other security personnel. On the night of the election, all entry points will be cordoned off by midnight. Only officials on election duty will be allowed to move, properly identified with tags.”
Orutugu listed Ihiala, Osumenyi, Lilu, Ozubulu, Anam, Amichi, Aguluezechukwu, Achalla, and Amunike as areas that will receive intensive operations ahead of the election.
Convener of the Situation Room, Dr. Y.Z. Yau, expressed concern over declining voter turnout in recent elections, emphasizing that citizens would only regain confidence if authorities ensure neutrality, timely logistics, and adequate security.
He added, “If the environment is conducive, logistics are well-managed, and security agencies ensure peace and order, citizens will feel confident to come out and cast their votes.”
