Presidency: Igbos will serve eight years when its time, says Umahi

Works Minister Engr. Dave Umahi has stated that the South-East region of Nigeria will serve as President for eight years, describing those clamouring for a four-year single term as delusional, cunning, and deceitful to the region

The minister also posited that the South-East has enough qualified persons who have distinguished themselves in various fields of endeavour and urged the Igbos to resist any attempt to force them to work against the second-term ambition of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Recall that the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general elections, Mr Peter Obi, has consistently announced his desire to serve a single term if elected President of Nigeria in the forthcoming 2027 elections.

Obi, a former Governor of Anambra State, had argued on several occasions after the 2023 elections that a four-year single term would be enough for him to fix the web of challenges faced by Nigeria, ranging from insecurity, economy, inflation, job creation, and corruption.

Addressing journalists in his office on Wednesday, Umahi made it clear that the Tinubu administration has done exceedingly well for the South-East region in many aspects, particularly in road construction and bridges. He urged the Igbos to support his second-term bid so that he could complete the ongoing projects that could not be completed within his first four years.

He continued, “The Igbos will not serve for only four years; we will serve for eight years. When that time comes, the Igbos will not even be president by being sentimental or by not telling the truth.

“Mr President has done us very well in the South-East, and when I hear people talk about appointments, I ask them, between appointments and infrastructure, which one is better? And we are not going to stop telling our people the truth; we are going to be vocal in educating them because anybody can be president when the time comes for an Igbo man to be president.”
