A consultant Radiologist with the National Hospital Abuja, Dr. Feyisayo Daji, has advised women to desist from using breast firming creams, and breast augmentation with Silicone Gel implant, as doing so could impact their organs negatively.

She has, however, encouraged them to examine their breasts monthly, especially three to five days after their monthly period, and report any bloody or brownish discharge to appropriate medical personnel.

Daji gave the advice yesterday at a breast cancer awareness campaign, organised by the Naval Officers Wives Association (NOWA), at the Nigerian Navy Medical Centre, Pegi, Kuje Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Daji, who explained that cancer is a growth of abnormal cells, which could start from any part of the breast, added that breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the whole world, and its risk factors include old age and genetics.

“Once you have breast cancer in your family history, it is likely you may have it also, as far as you are a female. There is also the issue of aging and genetic. However, women should stop using breast-firming creams so as not to come down with cancer as a result of the use of some of such creams. Treatment of cancer is very expensive, but it is cheaper to prevent it.”

Earlier, President of NOWA, Mrs. Theresa Ibas, who said that cancer is not a death sentence, stated that the awareness campaign is a wake up call for women to begin to take care of their bodies.
