The Nigeria Union of Railway Workers (NURW) has condemned the unprovoked assault and violation of peaceful Workers’ Day gathering in Imo State by the state government.

According to NURW, the act is nothing but a proof of the state government’s penchant for thuggery and subjecting workers, as well as people of the state to excruciating hardship and denials of their minimum rights as citizens.

In a statement obtained by The Guardian, the Secretary General of NURW, Segun Esan, said that this act of crass incivility and intolerance against workers and people of Imo is an affront and insolence on the collective sensibilities of the Nigerian workers.

He, therefore, noted that this must be confronted, interrogated and resisted by the congress and its affiliates, irrespective of the fact that such misconduct is evidently emblematic of Hope Uzodimma’s government.

The statement reads: “NURW identifies with you as your council has gone ahead to shut down Imo to render it completely a dark recluse where no industrial peace is guaranteed.”

“NURW supports your council to hold Uzodinma responsible for the consequences of this industrial action against his unpopular government.

Railway workers stand with the state council of workers in demanding due compensation from the state government for the damage and losses incurred by any of the workers, who were violently attacked and dispersed by thugs mobilised by government at the May Day gathering.”
