Rape victim gets scholarship, house from Abia gov’s wife

An 11-year-old girl, who was sexually assaulted by two men, has been granted full scholarship up to university level by the Abia State government, while a house will also be built for her family.

The wife of the governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, announced this when she visited the family at Okaiuga Nkwoegwu in Umuahia North Local Council yesterday.

The governor’s wife’s said she was moved by newspaper reports at the weekend, which revealed how the girl and her friend (names withheld) were lured by two men (now at large) to a building within the community, where the victim was sexually abused.

Ikpeazu expressed shock that humans could debase themselves to the level of animals, describing the incident as strange and very painful.

According to her, the governor has ordered a full investigation into the matter with a view to arresting the culprits and their possible collaborators.

She then took the young girl back with her to ensure she is given adequate treatment for injuries sustained at government’s expense in a state-owned Specialist Hospital.

“We are doing our best to help her overcome this traumatic period quickly. We will rehabilitate her and give her a renewed sense of life. A new house will be built for her family while we are also setting up a new business for her mother who is just a petty trader to help her sustain the family.

“Her father is out of work. You can see the place they live. It is sad that adults who should care for and protect young ones now become predators and prey on such little children. We will not tolerate that. The security agencies will fish out the culprits and bring them to book,” she vowed.
