Red Cross unveils humanitarian plan

The Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS) has validated its two-year Unified Humanitarian Plan (2026–2027), setting out a coordinated roadmap to tackle pressing humanitarian challenges while prioritising climate adaptation, disaster response, and inclusive support for vulnerable groups.

The validation workshop, held yesterday in Abuja, brought together representatives of government ministries, humanitarian organisations, development partners, civil society, and community leaders to strengthen the draft plan and ensure it aligns with Nigeria’s development priorities and global humanitarian frameworks.

Speaking at the event, Country Manager of the British Red Cross, Karsten Voigt, said the unified plan would help streamline humanitarian efforts across Nigeria by fostering coordinated planning among Red Cross partners .

He stressed that climate change remains one of the five strategic priorities of the Red Cross network.

“Adapting to climate change and supporting communities to deal with the increasing impact of flooding, droughts, and other shocks is one of the key activities the Red Cross will focus on in the coming years,” Voigt noted.

He acknowledged the growing humanitarian needs in Nigeria due to conflict and climate crises, adding that funding cuts globally make coordination and efficiency more important than ever.

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Special Needs and Equal Opportunities, Muhammed Abba Isa, commended the Red Cross for adopting an inclusive approach.

He emphasised that persons with disabilities, who are often disproportionately affected in times of crisis, must remain central to the design and implementation of humanitarian strategies.
