The Federal Government has attributed the level of insecurity to the reduction of surface water resources and quality, reduced grazing areas, mainly because of population growth and less complementarity between crop farmers and livestock producers as being responsible for the farmers-herders crises.

The government also said such frequent clashes in Nigeria, as in most West African countries, spotlight the contemporary security challenges across the country and the sub- region.

Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha, who spoke in Abuja, yesterday, said to address some of these challenges, innovative local initiatives were being developed in many parts of West Africa to facilitate and protect livestock mobility.

Mustapha, who played host to members of the executive of Intelligence Management Course 12 of the Institute for Security Studies, Abuja, stated that government has taken steps to address the challenge in a sustainable manner, including increasing stakeholders consultation towards the development of the identified 450 grazing reserves being provided with facilities and security.

The SGF, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Special Services, Mrs. Amina M.B. Shamaki, said billions of naira was recently provided by the government to rehabilitate victims of the clashes in some parts of the country, while security agencies have stepped up surveillance and operations to deal with the matter.
