The Deputy Spokesperson of the House of Representatives, Philip Agbese, has described the ambassadorial posting of Jimoh Ibrahim to the United Nations as a strategic move that could strengthen Nigeria’s global influence and support international peacebuilding efforts.
Speaking with reporters in Abuja, Agbese commended Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the appointment, noting that it reflects a deliberate effort to reposition Nigeria’s diplomatic presence and amplify its voice in multilateral engagements.
The Benue lawmaker, who recently defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Labour Party (LP), said Ibrahim’s appointment is not only beneficial to Nigeria but also valuable to the global community.
He emphasized that the senator’s background in legislation, business, and public service equips him to contribute meaningfully to diplomacy at a time of rising geopolitical tensions.
Agbese expressed confidence that Ibrahim’s role at the United Nations would aid efforts to promote dialogue, foster stability, and support peaceful resolution of conflicts in regions such as the Middle East and other volatile areas.
He further noted that the appointment could help bridge diplomatic and economic gaps between Africa and the rest of the world, ensuring stronger cooperation and better representation of the continent’s interests on the global stage.
Dismissing criticisms surrounding the posting, Agbese insisted that Ibrahim possesses the intellectual depth and leadership capacity required for the role.
He added that the new envoys are expected to advance Nigeria’s foreign policy objectives, promote economic diplomacy, and attract investment.
Agbese also urged the appointees to uphold Nigeria’s image and justify the confidence placed in them, while calling on citizens to support the administration’s efforts to strengthen international partnerships for national development.
