Rescuers recover six bodies from Niger boat mishap

Two days after a commercial boat capsized in Niger, the state Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) has recovered bodies of six victims. The Guardian learnt that the accident occurred on Monday, between Agwara Local Council of Niger State, and Yauri in Kebbi State.
     
The victims, whose bodies were recovered at about 3:00p.m. on Tuesday evening, include Bilyaminu Kontagora, Dauda Alhassan Kasabu, Joshua
Auta, from Niger State, while Murna Ezekiel, Illiya Kpchra Busuru, and Amos Samuel, were from Kebbi State.
 
Confirming the development, yesterday, acting Director-General of NSEMA, Salihu Garba, said the boat took off from Kasabu village of Agwara, and was heading to Yauri, in Kebbi State, before it capsized .
 
 Garba, quoting one of the survivors, said the boat was carrying 22 passengers at the time of the incident .
 
The NSEMA boss attributed the mishap to water hyacinth and strong waves. He disclosed that search and rescue operations are still ongoing by the local divers and boat owners under the strict supervision of NSEMA Agwara’s desk officers.
