The Rivers State House of Assembly has issued a warrant of arrest for Rtd Justice Adolphus Enebeli, Chairman of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RISIEC), following his refusal to appear before the House.
This development comes after the Assembly had summoned Enebeli and members of RISIEC to appear before it within 48 hours or face arrest and later extended the invitation to 72 hours which elapsed today.
According to reports, the chairman and members of the commission declined to appear before the Assembly, prompting the issuance of the warrant of arrest.
The refusal to appear has been seen as a direct challenge to the Assembly which summoned them to answer questions regarding their activities.
The situation has taken a further turn with the resignation of three out of the seven members of the commission.
The Rivers State House of Assembly claimed their action is pursuant to Section 129 (1) (d) of the 1999 Constitution as amended, which grants the Assembly the power to summon individuals and organizations to appear before it.
