Deputy speaker Idris Wase visits Rivers State governor Nyesom Wike

Rivers State governor Nyesom Wike said the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) will support any candidate presented by the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the position of speaker of the House of Representatives.

Wike disclosed this on Monday when the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Idris Wase, led a delegation of lawmakers to visit the governor at the government house in Port Harcourt to solicit support for the speakership.

Wike said the PDP won 11 of the 13 House of Representatives seats in the state and that the lawmakers-elect will support a consensus candidate nominated by the APC for the position of speaker.

“The truth must be told that we are going to support the leadership of your party at the national level,” Wike said.

The governor said the PDP in the state will back the candidate that has the experience and capacity to stabilise the house.

“You (Wase) are an experienced person. What we require now is experience as far as the legislature is concerned. Experience will stabilise the house. So, (we) don’t require a greenhorn,” Wike said.

Wase told Wike that he was in Port Harcourt with lawmakers from different political parties to seek support ahead of the leadership election of the house.

“I was accompanied by a team of Honorable members and Members-elect of the House of Representatives on a one-day consultative visit to H.E Nyesom Wike the Executive Governor of Rivers State to share my aspiration for the speakership of the tenth Assembly,” Wase tweeted after the meeting.

“Thank you for your support, warm welcome and hospitality.”

Some of the members of the House that have declared interest include Yusuf Gagdi from Plateau State and Abubakar Makki from Jigawa State.

The speakership election is scheduled for June 2023 but the ruling party is yet to make a pronouncement on the zoning of the offices in the National Assembly.
