To mark the 2020 Workers Day, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has called on the federal and state governments to respect workers and attend to their demands with all seriousness, while setting aside any unwholesome anti-workers policies.

National Chairman of SDP, Professor Tunde Adeniran, commended Nigerian workers whom he said had toiled for the country’s economic growth but were at great personal risk for the safety of Nigerians amid the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) crisis.

In similar tone, Speaker, Lagos State House of Assembly, Mr. Mudashiru Obasa, has described the workers as the wheels of progress of the nation’s economy.

Also, the publicity secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party in Lagos, Mr. Taofik Gani, said Nigerian workers were worth being celebrated for their selfless service, which kept the country moving despite obvious discouraging government policies, particularly in the areas of salary, taxation, delayed and sentimental promotions, unsecured pensions and gratuities to mention a few.

In a statement yesterday SDP urged governments to always provide tools and conducive environment for workers to function efficiently, just as it commended the commitment, resilience and sacrifices of the Nigerian workers.

The party added that with the world in the grip of an unseen vicious enemy called COVID-19, this year’s Workers Day should be to salute and celebrate workers, not just for ensuring economic growth and routine services but for risking their own lives to save lives.

It said, “The contributions of our working class in the public and private sectors towards building the Nigerian economy are massive and cannot be underrated. With the rapid spread of COVID-19, we must specially remember and mention nurses, midwives, doctors and all those who are called to the front-line in the detection, treatment and prevention of the devastating and treacherous coronavirus, often at personal risk.”

For the Lagos Speaker, workers are the wheels of progress of the economy of any nation without which the wellbeing of such nation will be at a standstill.

PDP charged the workforce to remain committed, selfless and productive as ever, stating that the welfare and other needs of the Lagos workers remain paramount on to the party.
