President, Lagos State Cooperative Federation (LASCOFED), Mr. Oladipo Shobule, on Monday, said the body had contributed immensely to the economic growth and democratic stability of the nation.

Shobule, who declared the organisation’s continuous commitment to the welfare of its members, spoke during a media briefing in Lagos to announce the forthcoming cooperative festival beginning today and running through to Thursday.

The festival, which would be the maiden edition, the President said, would further boost the growth and development of the nation economy, especially Lagos state.

He said: “Over the years, the Lagos State Cooperative Movement has grown from catering for only its members; to being an active stakeholder of the fourth pillar of the T.H.E.M.E.S. agenda of the Lagos State Government, making the state a 21st Century economy.

“With an asset base of over N30 billion, the Cooperative Movement in the state has been consistent over the years in contributing meaningfully to both the economic prosperity and democratic stability of the state.

“Cooperative Societies in Lagos State are at the forefront of providing succour to the socio-economic challenges of its members and Lagosians at large as they continue to provide homes, food and jobs, as well as improving the standard of living of both members and non-members.”

He noted that the festival became necessary to create awareness of the importance of cooperatives to individual corporate organisations and the government and showcase the potentials and contribution of the movement to the economy of Lagos State and Nigeria.

Among activities lined-up for the event included a lecture on ‘Cooperatives Sustainability: An economic and Democratic Approach to Prosperity of Lagos State,’ exhibition of products and services by the body, free health intervention for cervical and prostate cancer, drama, documentary, raffle drawn and the giving of awards to individuals with significant contribution to the growth and development of the movement in Lagos State.

The president, therefore, urged members and non-members to participate actively in the festival for democratic stability in the state.
