At least six persons have been confirmed dead as a tanker laden with fuel ran into two tricycles at Ntak Inyang, by Akwa Ibom Broadcasting Corporation in Itu Local Government Area, near Uyo, the state capital.

The accident occurred at the failed portion of the road, which is under rehabilitation by the state government, forcing vehicles and motorists to ply on one lane.

An eyewitness who pleaded anonymity told our correspondent that the congestion on the free lane led to traffic congestion on the only lane, thereby leading to motorists trying to meander through any available space, which resulted in the accident.

“The fuel truck rammed into the approaching tricycle from the opposite direction, resulting in the accident,” the eyewitness said.

Confirming the incident in a telephone interview, the State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mr Ogah Ochi, said the dead included one female and five males.

“Actually, six people died; one female and five males. Actually, the details of the investigation will come out by tomorrow. Our investigators have gone there and the preliminary report they have given me, I think, confirms that two trucks were actually involved in the crash, but one escaped.

“The truck that actually caused the accident ran away. It overtook at that point, and this one was trying to veer off from the truck that was overtaking and now ran into two Keke (tricycles),” he explained.
