Igbobi College students have canvassed state police as a solution to Nigeria’s insecurity

The pupils made their stance is known during a debate on: “State police is the solution to insecurity in Nigeria” as part of activities to commemorate the institution’s Old Boys Association 50/52 anniversary thanksgiving, yesterday, in Lagos.

The debate, which was held in Yoruba language for the first time in the history of the college, was to promote the ethnic group’s culture and tradition.

One of the debaters, Raphael Awotade, who spoke in support of the motion, argued that state police would have a smooth relationship with residents due to knowledge of the language, culture and tradition, thus ensuring seamless discharge of duties.

He noted that operatives would quickly locate scenes of incidents in the event of the hindsight of habitation and act swiftly to address the situation.

His words: “Since the creation of Amotekun in South West region, there has been improvement in security in the area.”

Another debater, Moyosore Abidapo, opposing the motion, said the initiative would be abused by governors.

He maintained that if the state government could sponsor thuggery, it could possibly weaponise state police against political opponents.

In his words: “The cordial relationship between the state police and the people will not allow adequate discharge of his (governor) duties which can be a threat to insecurity.”

Chairman of the occasion and president of Igbobi College Old Boys Association (ICOBA), Babatunde George, who harped on the promotion of Yoruba culture, charged parents and teachers to internalise the mores in children

The college’s Head Teacher, Adedotun Akanbi, commended 1970/1972 set for encouraging Yoruba tradition and culture.
