Suspension of SGF, DG NIA belated, says Balarabe Musa

Balarabe Musa

Opposition leader and former governor of Kaduna State, Alhaji Balarabe Musa, has criticised the Federal Government over the handling of the anti-corruption crusade in the country.

Musa said the suspension of the Secretary to Government of the Federation (SGF), David Babachir Lawal, and Director General of the Nigerian Intelligence Agency (NIA), Ayo Oke, over alleged corruption cases involving them was belated, considering that the cases involving them were based on public trust and should not have been allowed to drag on before asking them to step aside.

Musa, who is also the Chairman of Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP), said: “I am surprise why their suspension is coming so late.

“The allegation involving the SGF has been going on for a long time. Why is that it is now that he is suspended? Allowing the problem to continue for so long would enable the persons involved to tamper with evidences.

“The cash discovered by Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is not really surprising. People have stolen so much that they don’t even know where to hide money again. We expect more of this to be discovered later.

“But on the face of it, the suspension of the DG is justified, especially in the fight against corruption.  The stealing in this country by officials of government is so much that there is no longer control over theft.”

Musa argued: “They are now finding it difficult to hide the money and it is not possible to change the huge sums of hard currencies into naira or keep them in the bank. So, they hide it away in their homes, toilets and cemeteries in order to be collecting them in bits for spending.

“This situation in the country is deplorable. This scenario we are witnessing today shows the level of corruption in this country.”

The former governor blamed the incidences of corruption among public office holders on the system controlling development in the country, noting: “Therefore, this situation is inevitable. They have established this system in the leadership of the country, which is based on self-interest first and public interest second.

“You can only address this problem by changing the system controlling all phases of development in the country.”
