Taraba commissioner under fire over foreign degree certificate
Security agencies in Taraba State have been called upon to investigate the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Joseph Joshua, over allegations of obtaining a degree certificate from a university in Benin Republic.
The call followed a report published by an online medium, which exposed the ease with which a reporter acquired a degree from an African university within six weeks, subsequently participating in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme.
This prompted the Federal Government to suspend the evaluation and accreditation of degree certificates from Benin Republic and Togo.
Dated January 15, 2024 and addressed to the Director, Department of State Services (DSS), Taraba State Command, Jalingo, the petition urged the security agencies to scrutinise the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) in Information Technology with Second Class (Upper Division) Joshua obtained in 2021.
The certificate was submitted to the Taraba House of Assembly during his screening and confirmation as Commissioner.
Sulaiman Scatter of Jalingo Local Council, the petitioner, alleged that the commissioner never travelled to Benin Republic for studies.
He urged the agencies to investigate the number of visits, years covered and examine the international passport evidence of his claimed visits during the period of obtaining the said certificate.
Contacted for comment, the commissioner simply said: “I have no comment.Let the security to their job.”
