The Guardian ex-Law Report Editor, Chris Okeke, Deputy Managing Partner, Olaniwun Ajayi LP, Wolemi Esan, and human rights activist, Jerry Aondo, were among the 87 lawyers conferred with the prestigious Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) yesterday by the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, at Supreme Court in Abuja.

At a ceremony marking the start of the new legal year, the CJN highlighted the significance of the SAN rank, emphasising the accompanying responsibilities that each new appointee must uphold.

According to her, of the 127 applicants, 87 were shortlisted after a rigorous evaluation by the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC). Justice Kekere-Ekun noted the high standards outlined in the 2022 Guidelines for conferment, underscoring the importance of merit and ongoing review of criteria to maintain the profession’s integrity.

She warned that the SAN title, though a privilege, could be revoked if misused, calling for exemplary conduct and a commitment to justice. The CJN also urged the legal community to mentor younger lawyers, stressing the need for adherence to professional decorum, particularly regarding courtroom attire.

She underscored the role of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in fostering relationships between the Bench and Bar, commending recent technological advancements in lawyer registration and election processes.
