Students of Olabisi Onabanjo University, (OOU), Ibogun campus, Ogun State, on Saturday, took to the street and protested against incessant armed robbery attacks on their hotels.
The students demonstration followed the latest midnight robbery attacks on their hostels where two students sustained injuries and money, phones, laptops and a Lexus car were carted.
Displaying placards with inscription including “Give us Security” amid solidarity songs, the students, mostly from the Faculty of Engineering and Environmental Studies, took to the street and demanded safety and protection of lives and properties.
They were, however, attacked by some thugs who wielded cutlasses, bottles, and other dangerous weapons during the protest as some students sustained injuries in the process.
A resident, who craved anonymity said that the armed robbers attack the students’ hotels at the midnight, injured two students and stole their valuables including phones, laptops and car.
The source said that the attack forces the students to embark on a protest, calling for the security around their hostel and surroundings but they were also attacked by some thugs in the process.
“Armed robbers reportedly invaded a student hostel in the downtown area of Ibogun, carting away phones, money, laptops, and even a Lexus car. In the process, two students were seriously injured.”
“In response to this growing insecurity, students took to the streets today in a peaceful protest to demand safety and protection of lives and property. Shockingly, instead of being heard and protected, these students were violently attacked by area thugs wielding cutlasses, bottles, and dangerous weapons. Several students have again sustained injuries during the protest.” the resident said.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, when contacted confirmed the incident, saying that the police had launched an investigation into the matter.
Babaseyi said that the Divisional Police Officer of Ibogun Police Division and the Area Commander have drafted to the scene to assess the situation.
He, however, called for calmness among the students, noting that the force had taken decisive actions to ensure security in their area.
