Tinubu appoints Babangida’s son as Bank of Agriculture chairman

President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of Muhammad Babangida, son of former military president Ibrahim Babangida, as chairman of the restructured Bank of Agriculture, according to a statement released Friday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

The appointment is part of a fresh round of leadership changes affecting several federal institutions. The newly constituted team includes individuals who will serve as chairpersons or directors-general of various government agencies.

“Muhammad Babangida will serve as chairman of the Bank of Agriculture, which has recently undergone institutional reforms,” Onanuga confirmed in the statement.

Babangida, 53, studied Business Administration at the European University in Montreux, Switzerland, and obtained a Master’s degree in Public Relations and Business Communication from the same institution. He also completed an executive programme in Corporate Governance at Harvard Business School in 2002.

Alongside Babangida, the president named Lydia Kalat Musa from Kaduna State as chairman of the Oil and Gas Free Zones Authority (OGFZA), and Jamilu Wada Aliyu from Kano State as chairman of the National Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC).

Other appointees include Yahuza Ado Inuwa, also from Kano, as chairman of the Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON); Sanusi Musa (SAN), from Kano, as chairman of the Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR); and Prof. Al-Mustapha Alhaji Aliyu from Sokoto State as director-general of the Directorate of Technical Cooperation in Africa (DTCA).

Sanusi Garba Rikiji of Zamfara State has been appointed director-general of the Nigerian Office for Trade Negotiations (NOTN), while Mrs Tomi Somefun from Oyo State will lead the National Hydro-Electric Power Areas Development Commission (HYPPADEC) as managing director. Dr Abdulmumini Mohammed Aminu-Zaria of Kaduna State will serve as executive director of the Nigerian Integrated Water Resources Management Commission (NIWRMC).

The presidency did not give further details on the specific terms of reference or timelines for the assumption of office, but the appointments are expected to take effect immediately as part of ongoing efforts to fill strategic vacancies in key government agencies.
