Tinubu unveils RenewHER initiative to tackle maternal mortality

Pledges Integrated National Action For Women’s Welfare, Empowerment
President Bola Tinubu has launched RenewHER, a Presidential Women’s Health Transformation Initiative, designed to safeguard maternal health and advance the well-being of Nigerian women.

He described the programme as “an answer to one of the nation’s most critical prayers” and a cornerstone of a healthier Nigeria, ranking it as a national priority.

Speaking on Thursday night at the Launch Gala and Awards in the Presidential Villa, Abuja, President Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, stressed that women’s health is fundamental to Nigeria’s development trajectory.

He said the initiative would serve as “the national engine of collaboration among all stakeholders in our campaign for a healthier Nigeria.”

“There is no greater test of a nation’s character than the care it extends to its women. Maternal health is the heartbeat of every family, the compass of social stability, and the truest index of national welfare,” he declared.

The RenewHER programme will establish a presidential focal office on women’s health, working with the Federal Ministry of Health, the State-Wide Approach Coordination Office (SWAP), the Ministry of Women Affairs, and the Governors’ Spouses Forum.

The aim, he explained, is to embed women’s health priorities “in every state, every local government, and every community across the nation. ”

A key feature of the initiative is the creation of an AI-powered National Women’s Health Digital Hub to deliver geo-targeted campaigns on maternal survival, adolescent health, preventive care, and workforce strengthening.

The hub will also link women and families to trusted health information while connecting healthcare to entrepreneurship and national prosperity.

“Maternal mortality is a shame against which we must all rally. We owe every girl-child not just the eloquent promise of a better tomorrow, but the certainty of a healthier one,” President Tinubu said, adding that RenewHER would complement ongoing national initiatives such as MAMII, while aligning with international development partners.

He assured that his administration would serve as both “umbrella and catalyst” for interventions across all tiers of government until RenewHER delivers tangible results.

“With the mandate of the Nigerian people, I hereby unveil RenewHER, our Presidential Women’s Health Commitment,” he declared.

Kwara State First Lady and Chairperson of the Nigeria Governors’ Spouses Forum, Prof. Olufolake AbdulRazaq, pledged the forum’s support for the initiative across all states, emphasising that RenewHER represents a broader commitment to women’s empowerment.

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Women’s Health, Dr. Adanna Steinacker, credited President Tinubu’s vision for making RenewHER possible, calling on stakeholders to unite behind the initiative.

United Nations Women Country Representative for Nigeria, Ms. Beatrice Eyong, described RenewHER as a “turning point” and a “bold initiative” at the highest level of government, noting that women’s health is now being recognised as a driver of socio-economic growth.

She pledged the UN’s partnership to expand access and ensure dignity for Nigerian women.

Dignitaries at the event included the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, governors’ wives, diplomats, and development partners.
