National secretary of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) Senator Surajudeen Ajibola Basiru has urged the federal government to consider prosecuting Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) and Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for treason.

Bashiru said this as a guest on Wednesday’s edition of Politics Today on Channels Television while reacting to Obi’s press conference in Abuja.

The LP’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to save Nigeria and himself from what he described as “protracted embarrassment and undue anxiety” over the controversy surrounding his certificate.

Obi said this after a US court ordered the Chicago State University (CSU) to release Tinubu’s academic records at the request of Atiku.

Reacting to the press conference, Bashiru said it is time for some of the statements made by Obi and Atiku to be looked into by the Attorney General of the federation.

“What I can tell you is that it’s unfortunate that Mr Peter Obi allow the seeming trauma that affected Mr Atiku Abubakar also affect him too,” Bashiru said.

“I would say that perhaps there would be need for our school of psychiatry to begin to look at what could be traimatising some people after electoral loss.

“So for Obi to say the president should come and address the country, somebody who had the mandate of the Nigerian people, I think they are descending to the arena and I think it is high time the Attorney General of the Federation should look whether their act does not amount to treason.”

Citing the outcome of BBC’s investigation, Bashiru said the forensic analysis of Tinubu’s diploma certificate already authenticated the president’s academic record.

He added that it is self contrived, Ill-advised and attempt by Obi and Atiku to continue to lie to their supporters.
