Tribute to late Chief Tunde Odutola, Balogun “Jaguna Ijebu”

Chief Tunde Odutola Balogun was born on January 10, 1922 to the Salawu – Makusota family of Imupa- Ijebu Ode, Ogun State.

Chief Tunde Odutola Balogun was born on January 10, 1922 to the Salawu – Makusota family of Imupa- Ijebu Ode, Ogun State.

After his early education, he clerked at the Northern Assurance Company (UNIC), in 1947 in the marine survey department, which introduced him to the insurance profession. From 1951- 1958, he worked with Edward W. Turner & Sons in Liverpool and London.

He returned to Nigeria in 1959 as a pioneer staff of National Employers Mutual (NEM Insurance PLC) and retired as Chief Inspector of Insurance in 1964 to set up Intra Niger Insurance Brokers as one of the pioneering broking houses in Nigeria

Balogun along with other insurance professionals set up Nigeria Cooperation of insurance brokers to infuse integrity and professionalism into insurance brokering practice.

In 1992 he became the pioneer Director of Equity Indemnity Insurance Company, currently called Sunu Assurance plc. He also served as chairman and director of Equity Assurance Limited and Managed Health Care Service limited respectively. He was also a director of Protec-sobratel (Telecoms) and Bacita Sugar Company

He was a member of the Metropolitan Club, Lagos, Island Club and Yoruba Tennis Club. His hobbies include travelling, tennis and bullards. He died as a fulfilled man at the ripe old age of 94 on March 14, 2016. He was an Ijebu traditional title Chief (Jaguna Ijebu) and solely missed by his family, the insurance industry and the corporate world.
