Troops kill 18 Boko Haram insurgents in Yobe, army establishes new brigade in Bayelsa
Air Force gets base in Imo State
Troops of Operation Lafiya Dole in the North-East have killed 18 Boko Haram terrorists who attempted to attack Kumuya Village in Gujba Local Council of Yobe State.
A military source in Damaturu said yesterday that the terrorists were desperately sourcing for food around the village while fleeing Sambisa Forest that was captured last year by the military.
“The insurgents attempted to attack Kumuya to cart away food items; but a fierce gun-battle ensued between them and our troops, leading to the death of 18 terrorists, while others sustained gunshot wounds,” said the source.
Confirming the incident yesterday, Director of Defence Information, Brig.-Gen. Rabe Abubakar, said efforts made by the community leader of Kumuya to alert the troops led to foiling the attack on the village.
In another development, the Chief of Army Staff (CAS), Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, yesterday commissioned the 16 Brigade of the Nigerian Army in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State and assured the people of the Army’s commitment to bring peace and stability to the state.
He described Bayelsa as a strategic location with boundaries at the Atlantic Ocean and strategic cross line and disclosed that the brigade was working to establish another unit in Nembe.
Buratai commended Governor Seriake Dickson for making security one of his administration’s top priorities, his continued support for security agencies and the provision of modern crime fighting equipment.
Responding, Dickson thanked President Muhammadu Buhari and the Army Command for fulfilling the pledge of setting up the new brigade in the state.
Also, the Federal Government has approved the establishment of an Air Force Command base in Imo State. Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, confirmed the development when he paid a visit to Governor Rochas Okorocha at Government House, Owerri, adding that President Buhari had given the people of the state a sense of belonging through the approval.
To compliment Federal Government effort, Okorocha said the state government would donate a 200-bed hospital to the new base.
