Two killed, others injured in Ebonyi political crisis

Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State

Two persons have been confirmed dead, as others sustained various degrees of injuries following Saturday’s political violence in deferent parts of Ebonyi State.

The victims were killed in Ngbo Agbaja ward in Izzi Local Government Area of the state by suspected political thugs, while six others who sustained bullet injuries are receiving treatment at a Hospital in Abakaliki.

Governor David Umahi had in a media briefing at the weekend said two persons were arrested in the state for planting improvised explosive devices (IEDs) on Ugwuogo Idembia Bridge in Ezza South Local Government Area.

He said their arrest followed intelligence report that some members of a political party were planning to bomb bridges and attack other installations in the state, adding that some villagers and members of the Neighbourhood Watch arrested the suspects.

When contacted, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Loveth Odah, confirmed the report, saying the anti-bomb squad unit had been dispatched to raid flash points in the state.

She gave the names of the victims as Nweke Kingsley from Ishielu and Uwakwe Chijoke from Ikwo.

Meanwhile, Campaign Coordinator of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for Idanre/Ifedore Federal constituency in Ondo State, Mayokun Akinmoladun, has raised alarm over a planned attack by heavily armed thugs allegedly brought in to attack opposition party members in Idanre and its environs.

It, therefore, urged security agencies in the state to urgently step in to avert what it described as an impending bloodbath, should the thugs carry out their plot.

The group said Nigerians should hold politicians responsible for any breakdown of law and order in Idanre/Ifedore.

They accused a prominent politician in the area of importing armed thugs into the town, alleging that while some of them are already in Idanre, others were in Akure from where they would move in to unleash mayhem on the town.

“We are particularly worried at the latest development is because the politician is an Idanre son. We, therefore, wonder why he would want to wreck havoc on his hometown just because majority have chosen to be with the PDP.

“Ours is a civilized and peaceful community where everyone is free to exercise their freedom of choice. Hence, we in PDP do not see elections, as a do-or-die affair,” he stated.
