A Nigerian-born physician practicing in the United States, Dr. Uzoma Nwaubani, has passed away following a sudden medical emergency while participating in a free healthcare outreach in Abia State.
The incident occurred during a five-day medical mission held between April 13 and April 17, 2026.
The outreach was organised by the Abia State Government in partnership with the Association of Nigerian Physicians in the Americas, with the aim of delivering accessible healthcare services to underserved communities.
Dr. Nwaubani, who was part of the visiting medical team, had travelled to Nigeria alongside her family, including her husband and daughter, a final-year medical student in the United States.
Their visit was driven by a shared commitment to humanitarian service and improving healthcare access for residents in the state.
According to Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, the physician experienced a sudden health crisis during the outreach and was immediately rushed to a medical facility for urgent care.
A joint team comprising ANPA professionals and local healthcare experts reportedly made extensive efforts to stabilise her condition.
Despite these interventions, she could not be revived.
Governor Otti expressed profound sadness over the loss, describing Dr. Nwaubani as a selfless and compassionate professional whose dedication to service left a lasting impact.
He extended his condolences to her family, colleagues, and the wider medical community, adding that the state government has initiated contact with her loved ones and will provide necessary support.
He also acknowledged the resilience of Dr. Nwaubani’s family and the medical team, noting that the outreach programme continued in honour of her legacy and commitment to service.
Her passing has cast a solemn tone over the initiative, even as many beneficiaries continue to reflect on the life-changing care she helped provide in her final days.
