UBTH provides free medical checkups for elderly persons

The University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) yesterday provided free medical checkups for elderly persons in the state.

Chief Medical Director (CMD), UBTH, Prof. Darlington Obaseki, who spoke at the event, harped on the need for elderly persons to go for regular checkups to avoid diseases, which could lead to death.

Obaseki said that the event was organised by UBTH in collaboration with Egor Local Council of the state as part of activities to celebrate the 2019 United Nations International Day of Older Persons (UNIDOP) with the theme: “The Journey to Age Equality.”

The CMD, who stressed the need for people to have healthy lifestyle, said the aim of the event was to teach old people how to improve on their health to live longer.

“This programme was organised to celebrate our fathers and mothers above 60 years of age in Edo. It is a programme celebrated every October by the United Nations (UN) for elderly people.

“We the management of UBTH are prepared to carry out some checkups on hypertension, diabetes, nuggets for successful aging, among others.

“Living a healthy life in old age is very important,” Obaseki said.

Chairman of Egor Local Government Council, Eghe Ogbemudia, represented by Vice Chairman of the council, Mr. Rex Benjamin, thanked the management of UBTH for organising free checkups for elderly persons in Edo.

Rex, while commending UBTH management for the initiative to improve the health of the aged in the society, said majority of elderly persons do not have the opportunity to access medical services, particularly medical checkups regularly.
