Enugu State Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, has ordered a full scale investigation into reports of adulterated kerosene, which is responsible for loss of lives and injuries in Igbo-Etiti and Nsukka local councils in the state.

The incident happened on Thursday night. Two families in Aku and Ukehe communities reportedly went to sleep, when the lantern they ignited from the adulterated kerosene exploded. The resultant fire outbreak was said to have destroyed their building and caused injuries to the residents.

Sources said several residents in Nsukka local council experienced similar incident, suspected to have been caused by adulterated kerosene.
While some lives were claimed from the outbreaks, others died at the hospital. A few others are recuperating.

Following the incident, Ugwuanyi directed the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) and other relevant government agencies to investigate thoroughly and determine those responsible for importing the harmful product into the state.

He also directed the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Emmanuel Ikechukwu Obi and the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Ifeanyi Agujiobi, to ensure that those who suffered physical injury are effectively provided with the best available medical care at the expense of the state government.

The governor’s directives were contained in a statement by the Commissioner for Information, Nnanyelugo Chidi Aroh, which also conveyed the state government’s sincere condolences to the families that lost their loved ones, due to the adulterated petroleum product.
