The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has honoured the Acting Registrar/Chief Executive Officer of the Institute of Chartered Chemists of Nigeria (ICCON), Chemist Akwaowo Reuben Idongesit, with its Most Distinguished Alumni Award for his contributions to the chemistry profession and public service.
The award was presented during the Department of Pure and Industrial Chemistry’s Memorial Day celebration at the university’s Senate Chambers.
Akwaowo’s recognition followed a career spanning scientific administration, professional regulation and institutional development. He joined the Federal Civil Service in 2005 as a pioneer staff member of ICCON and subsequently served as Head of Administration, Director of Scientific Services and Coordinator of the institute’s zonal offices.
He also led the institute’s team and represented ICCON in the National Chemical Personnel Audit exercise, contributing to efforts to strengthen professional oversight and regulatory responsibilities.
Appointed Acting Registrar/CEO by the Federal Government with effect from June 1, 2026, Akwaowo currently leads the institute in implementing its statutory mandate to regulate the teaching, learning and practice of chemistry in Nigeria.
The award was presented under the leadership of the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Offiong Efanga Offiong, with the Head of the Department of Pure and Industrial Chemistry, Prof. Grace Ekpenyong Iniama, playing a key role in the department’s academic and professional engagements.
The recognition comes amid growing concerns over the need for effective regulation of chemical practice, given its implications for public health, environmental protection and national development.
ICCON said the honour reflected the importance of professional competence, dedicated public service and leadership in strengthening regulatory institutions and advancing the application of scientific knowledge.
The institute congratulated Akwaowo on the recognition, describing it as a source of pride to the chemistry community.
